I pulled off the main road near the edge of the Sonoran Desert, gravel crunching under my tires as I parked in the desert pullout. The heat hit me first, a dry blast that smelled of creosote and dust. I sat on the hood with a bottle of water, watching a roadrunner dart between cacti under the low, hazy sun. Desert pullout 13
